Incident of Credit Card Account Theft During Overseas Travel and Shopping

As part of operating this website, I embarked on a journey to conduct on-site research, during which I experienced one of the most chilling incidents I’ve encountered in my life. I’d like to share this story with you.

As indicated in the title, the incident involved the theft and subsequent misuse of my credit card information during shopping while on my overseas research trip.

Credit cards are incredibly convenient not only within Japan but also abroad. However, accidents can sometimes happen, and so today, I’ll recount my personal experience of credit card fraud and how it unfolded.

By the way, I’ve also provided information about what to do if your credit card information is misused in case you’re interested.

How My Credit Card Account Was Theft

The incident took place in 2018 when I extended my trip to Philadelphia for Independence Day celebrations as part of my research. It all began when I went shopping at a small, privately-owned store.

After selecting the items I wanted to purchase, I informed the cashier that I’d like to pay with my credit card. However, there was no card terminal available for processing the payment. Instead, the cashier guided me through the process using their online shop associated with the same store.

At that moment, unbeknownst to me, the cashier was inputting my card information in plain sight. It was too late by the time I realized that my card details had been compromised.

A few days later, the legitimate transaction amount from my shopping was reflected in my account, and I hadn’t yet realized that my card information had been stolen.

After completing my research and returning to Japan, about a week later, I casually reviewed my card statement. To my surprise, I discovered suspicious charges, and that’s when I noticed the double billing for the same transactions.

At that time, I assumed it was a mere oversight and contacted the credit card company to have the duplicate charges reversed. However, a few days later, little did I know that I would be facing shockingly high figures.

After initiating the reversal process, another set of charges equivalent to the previous ones was posted to my account. Feeling uneasy, I contacted the credit card company again, requesting a card reissuance and the cancellation of the fraudulent charges.

Although a new card arrived, the fraudulent charges persisted despite the replacement. They occurred at a rate of 2 to 3 times a week, even with the new card in hand.

Upon explaining the situation to the credit card company, I was informed that even after reissuing a card, the previous card details could remain active for approximately a month due to factors like payment updates.

Since I needed the issue resolved promptly, I communicated that I didn’t have any recurring charges. The credit card company immediately blocked the old card, freeing me from the fraudulent charges.

Navigating Credit Cards Wisely for Enjoyable Travel

Credit cards are incredibly handy, enabling cashless shopping and offering various perks. However, there are individuals who misuse them. If you find yourself in such a situation, first, stay calm. Contact your credit card company or temporarily suspend card usage online. Make sure to take appropriate actions promptly.
