When visiting Washington D.C., many people would love to take the opportunity to tour inside the White House, which serves as the residence and workplace of the President of the United States. However, to enter the White House, there are entry procedures and security checks in place.
As it is a foreign country, it’s understandable that travelers may want to be cautious to avoid any mishaps. In this context, I will provide a detailed explanation of the necessary steps to enter the White House based on my personal experience participating in an internal tour.
Please note that some details may change over time, so it’s essential to verify the latest information before planning your visit.
Entry Procedures
The reception area facing 15th Street near the south side of the Treasury Department is always filled with visitors.
To join the inside tour of the White House, it is necessary to complete the entry procedures in advance. When applying for entry, you will be asked to provide your preferred tour date and up to three alternative dates. It’s essential to carefully consider these options.
The White House is open for tours from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM on Tuesdays through Thursdays, and from 7:30 AM to 1:30 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. However, during the biannual Garden Tours, entry to the interior is not allowed, so it’s important to check the schedule beforehand.
Once your application is approved, you will receive an email with attached tickets. The email will include guidelines that you must follow and a list of items that are allowed and prohibited during the tour. It is recommended to read this information thoroughly before your visit. Additionally, be aware that there are no restroom facilities inside the White House. Prior to the tour, you’ll need to use the restrooms at the Commerce Department Visitor Center or the Ellipse Pavilion located on the south side of the White House.
