History of the Arboretum
Originally established in 1927 as a research institution under the United States Department of Agriculture, the United States National Arboretum is now open to the public. It remains under the management of the Agricultural Research Service but serves as a tourist destination, attracting around 600,000 visitors annually to see its collection of over 1,500 plant species.
Displayed Plant Collections
Covering an area of 1.8 square kilometers, the arboretum houses plants from around the world. It features themed areas such as the Herb Garden, an Asian collection of trees, and an area dedicated to flowering trees. Visitors can experience familiar Japanese plants like cherry blossoms in spring, crepe myrtles in summer, spider lilies in autumn, and hollies in winter.
The arboretum also showcases an impressive collection of bonsai, including notable specimens like the “Hiroshima Survivor” five-needle pine, which survived the atomic bombing, and a “Red Pine” gifted by the Imperial Household Agency of Japan. These bonsai collections are among the highlights of the arboretum.
United States Capitol Columns
The columns of the United States Capitol, now serving as a monument, are also located within the arboretum. Originally part of the United States Capitol until 1958, they were later relocated to the arboretum as a permanent residence. The columns’ foundation incorporates stones from the eastern steps of the United States Capitol. Visitors can enjoy a serene and unique experience by the poolside, surrounded by the glimmering water and soothing sounds.
How to Get to the Arboretum
The United States National Arboretum can be accessed via the Blue Line or Orange Line of the Metrorail, with Stadium-Armory Station being the closest station. However, as the arboretum is located a bit far from the station, it is recommended to use services like Uber or rent a car for easy access. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the arboretum, and there are plenty of parking spaces available on-site for smooth transportation.
