Visiting the hidden gem of an art museum, the Phillips Collection, located in Dupont Circle

The Phillips Collection is a modern art museum that was established in 1921. It stands out for its charming and welcoming atmosphere as it was converted from a private residence.

Established in 1921 as a modern art museum, it was the first of its kind in the United States, exclusively dedicated to exhibiting modern art. The Phillips family, who made a living from critiquing art, founded the museum, and it is built on the foundation of a renovated art gallery, dedicated to their late mother, in 1917.

The Collection at The Phillips Collection

The Phillips Collection displays a wide range of modern art pieces, including both American works and famous European masterpieces. Visitors can admire renowned works like Renoir’s “Luncheon of the Boating Party,” Paul Gauguin’s “The Ham,” and Van Gogh’s “Entrance to the Public Park in Arles,” which might be familiar to many Japanese art enthusiasts. The museum also houses works by other artists such as Monet, Bonnard, Manet, and more.

Additionally, the museum boasts an impressive collection of modern art by American artists. There are numerous artists represented, including Grandma Moses, John Marin, Edward Hopper, and others.

In fact, the Phillips Collection has also been featured in Japan under the name “Phillips Collection,” during the American Modern Art Exhibition in 2011.

Located in the Vibrant Dupont Circle Area

The museum is situated in the lively and energetic Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington D.C. It is open every day except Mondays when it remains closed. However, do note that the opening and closing hours vary depending on the day, so it’s recommended to check the schedule before planning your visit.

The most convenient way to access the museum is by using the subway, with the nearest station being the Dupont Circle Metro station on the Red Line. The museum is just one block away from the station, making it easily accessible even on inclement weather days.

A Must-Visit for Contemporary Art Enthusiasts

The Phillips Collection’s ideal location, close to downtown, makes it a fantastic spot to explore. As the largest collection of modern art in the United States, visitors can take their time and fully enjoy the art on display.

If you are an art lover who appreciates contemporary art, the Phillips Collection is a must-visit destination.
