Designed by architect Julius House in 1892, the H. H. Richardson House was originally owned by one of the early merchants in Washington D.C., Christian Hetchlerich. The Hetchlerich family lived in this house for several generations. In 1985, the family decided to donate the house to be converted into a museum, giving birth to the H. H. Richardson House Museum.
