The Blue Room’s Design Symbolizes Democracy

The Blue Room is an oval-shaped room located at the center of the White House’s first floor. It has traditionally been used as a reception room to welcome foreign dignitaries and diplomats from all over the world.

Chairs are arranged along the walls, where the guests are seated. Standing in the center of the room, the President can be relatively equidistant from all the guests, symbolizing democracy through its oval shape.

The “blue” in the room’s name can be observed in various elements, including satin curtains on the windows, swag curtains near the ceiling and walls, and furniture like chairs and sofas. The carpet on the floor is made of velvet. The walls are adorned with painted patterns, including touches of “gold” color throughout the room, creating a harmonious and elegant ambiance.

During Christmas, the Blue Room is where the Christmas tree is placed. Each year, a theme is chosen, and the tree is decorated accordingly.

The Room Transforms with Each New President

With each new President, the White House’s interior decor undergoes changes.

During the Kennedy administration, the First Lady expressed her vision for the White House to be a house that the nation could take pride in, serving as a museum to preserve the country’s history. She actively participated in the renovation and management of furniture and decorations. The walls and curtains were made brighter to exude youthfulness and sophistication, and antique items representing American culture were sourced from domestic dealers, transforming the space into a symbol of American culture.

When the interior was showcased on television, its splendor contributed to improving the government’s image, with effects far exceeding the cost invested.

The current Blue Room was renovated in 1995 during the presidency of William Jefferson Clinton. While it retains elements from the Kennedy era, it has been further embellished to create a more glamorous impression.
