Blair House – A Guesthouse near the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue

Blair House is a facility located near the White House in Washington, D.C., serving as a guesthouse for distinguished guests of the President of the United States. Situated across Pennsylvania Avenue, opposite the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Blair House comprises four connected buildings, with the main one being the white building.

History of Blair House

The white building was constructed in 1824, but it was later purchased by Francis Blair, who built another adjacent building. These two properties were eventually acquired by the United States government and combined to create Blair House, which serves as the official guesthouse for the President. In the 1980s, extensive renovations and expansions were carried out, resulting in the current large interconnected structure.

Inside of Blair House

Blair House contains numerous rooms serving various purposes. Here are some of them:

Jackson Place, Lee Dining Room, Blair Reception Room

Upon entering through the main entrance, you will find important rooms such as Jackson Place, where meetings and conferences are held, the Lee Dining Room, used for gatherings like Treasury Secretary meetings, and the Blair Reception Room, where future Presidents sign documents before the inauguration.

Lincoln Room, Truman’s Study Room

The Lincoln Room, frequently used for private discussions with cabinet members, and the room once used as President Truman’s study, provide a sense of history associated with past Presidents.

Viewing from Pennsylvania Avenue

Blair House, currently in use as a guesthouse, is not generally open to the public, making it difficult to visit from the inside. However, if you are visiting the White House, be sure to take a moment to admire its exterior from Pennsylvania Avenue.
