The Senate, one of these chambers, is composed of two senators elected from each state, serving as representatives of their respective states in Congress.

The Senate chamber, located in the northern wing of the United States Capitol, preserves the traditions of ancient Greece while dazzling visitors with its magnificent interior.

2018.11.26

2024.02.27

The Capitol Building: A Majestic Neoclassical Structure at the Heart of Washington D.C.

Made of marble, the Capitol Building follows the architectural style...

Stepping Inside the Senate Chamber

The Senate chamber is a vast hall with an open space up to the second floor, and the entire first floor is adorned with a deep blue carpet. The presiding officer’s chair and the secretary’s desk are located along the northern wall, elevated by two steps. Behind the presiding officer’s chair hangs a satin curtain with a blue base, while on the left side, the American flag is displayed, and on the right side, the Senate flag proudly stands.

The curtain bears the United States motto, “E Pluribus Unum – From Many, One,” symbolizing the unity derived from diversity.

The first-floor walls feature cream-colored walls with black marble columns embedded between wooden doors. The areas without doors are decorated with blue satin drapes, adorned with the timeless Greek Meander pattern, known as “Greek Key” in Japan. This pattern’s unending repetition represents the perpetuity of democracy.

The senatorial seats radiate from the presiding officer’s chair and rise in tiers as they move away from it. On the other hand, the second-floor galleries consist of five rows of seats in a staircase-like arrangement. The walls are adorned with vibrant golden patterns featuring Acanthus leaves, creating a beautiful ambiance.

The Origin of the Senate and House Names

The names “Senate” and “House” originated during the time when the Congress convened in Philadelphia. The congressional meeting place was a two-story building, with the Senate meeting on the upper floor and the House on the lower floor. The visual distinction was so clear that these names have been used ever since.

A Symbol of State Equality

The United States Senate, consisting of 100 members, maintains state equality by having two senators representing each state, regardless of its size. While the House of Representatives is based on a state’s population, leading to varying numbers of representatives from each state, the Senate ensures that each state has an equal say.

The Senate’s Influence

The Senate holds significant power in addition to its legislative authority. It plays a crucial role in advising and providing consent to the President, participating in impeachment trials, and electing the Vice President.

A Political Hall for Representatives from All States

The United States Senate can be seen as a political hall that upholds the principles of state equality. The magnificent interior, adorned with blue and gold, pays homage to ancient Greek traditions while reflecting the solemnity of American democracy.

The Senate chamber is open to the public on non-session days, making it a must-visit location when in Washington, D.C. However, please be aware that photography is not allowed inside the chamber. So, keep your cameras and smartphones stored in your bags or use designated storage areas.

Overall, the United States Senate chamber represents the blend of ancient Greek ideals and the core principles of American democracy, serving as a reminder of the collective power of state representation in the nation’s highest legislative body.

[70
post-1454","gallery","type-gallery","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","gallery_category-sightseeing
["GET
